Wood Refinishing
Our Specialty
Wood refinishing you don’t have to worry about.
Maintained so you never have to think about it. Sikkens, now ProLuxe, maintenance and restoration for fine exterior wood across Kona to Waimea. Gates, entry doors, ceilings, ohia posts, trim.

01
The Problem
The sun is harder on wood here than almost anywhere.
Big Island UV and salt air are about as hard on a wood finish as any climate gets. An ocean-facing gate or garage door in direct sun can need attention every six to twelve months. The same coating tucked under an eave can go years. Knowing the difference is most of the job.
02
The Two Paths
Stay on the cycle, or strip to bare wood.
There are two ways fine wood goes on this island.
On the cycle: a maintenance coat once a year or less on high-exposure surfaces. The finish never fails, and the wood underneath never suffers.
Off the cycle: the film breaks down, water gets in, and the only fix is stripping everything back to bare wood and rebuilding the full system. Slow, labor-heavy, and far more expensive than the maintenance it replaces.
We’ll walk your property and tell you which surfaces need work now and which can wait. Not everything needs to be redone, and we’re not in the business of selling work your wood doesn’t need.

Exterior
The wood that makes a Big Island home feel like one.
A deck is not a gate. Dense hardwoods like ipe want an oil-based penetrating product (ProLuxe SRD, Penofin, Rymar Exotic Wood, Armstrong Clark), not a film that will peel. We match the system to the species, which is why we look at your wood before we quote it.

The System
Three steps, done in order.
Sikkens earned its name on this island. PPG renamed it ProLuxe; same product. One coat of Cetol 1 penetrates and bonds to the wood. Two coats of Cetol 23 build the film that blocks UV and sheds weather.
When a finish has already failed, restoration means taking it back to bare wood by sanding, scraping, or stripping, then rebuilding all three coats. That’s the expensive path the maintenance cycle exists to prevent.
“Bottom line, we care about the wood and doing it right. Attention to the proper steps and all the details.”
Jon Hopkin, owner

Who Does The Work
Twenty-plus years in the trade.
Jon Hopkin has been painting and refinishing wood since 1997. Today his crews maintain the wood at Kohanaiki and on estates along Kona to Waimea, where the finish has to be perfect and the property has to be respected.
“Jon with Magic Brush Painting arrived early, got right to work. Results exceeded my expectations!”
